Taking Home A Cherished Piece Of Heritage
2 April 2019
Penang, 2 April 2019 – The Eastern & Oriental (E&O) Hotel was abuzz recently with its pre-loved furniture sale held in conjunction with the renovation of the hotel’s Heritage Wing.
Loyal hotel guests as well as avid furniture collectors travelled far and near for a chance to own a cherished piece of this heritage landmark.
Among the items for sale were dressing tables, television cabinets, sofas, televisions, mini bars, coffee tables and bedroom benches.
Australian Dianna Blackett, whose family made it a point to stay at the E&O Hotel every year, was one of the first few who came to own her share of the E&O memory.
“We first saw the E&O Hotel from the German film ‘Love and Death on Java’ about seven to eight years ago and decided to come for a visit.
“We immediately fell in love with the hotel ambiance and setting and made it our yearly holiday home until we finally moved to Penang for good last December.
“My husband and I decided to come here upon learning about the sale as we are so emotionally attached to the hotel and owning something from this place we both love just means so much to us,” she said after purchasing a coffee table.
Penangite Jeremy Tan wanted to get a few pieces from the sale to adorn his new home as he believed that the furniture was equivalent to the timeless elegance of the hotel.
“I wanted to be the first few early birds but unfortunately I got the date wrong and only came on the second day. Still, I considered myself lucky to be able to score a spotless looking mirror,” he said.
The hotel general manager Alison Fraser said the management was overwhelmed by the positive response received from the furniture sale, which was initially scheduled to run from Mar 28 to Mar 30.
“We had to end the sale by mid-day of Mar 29 as all the pieces were sold out.
“We hope whoever bought the furniture will cherish them and create their own memories with these pieces.”
The E&O Hotel Heritage wing is currently undergoing refurbishment works and is scheduled to resume operation in December 2019, while business is as usual at the Victory Annexe wing.
The refurbishment of the E&O Hotel marks another milestone in the E&O Group’s legacy of creating landmark properties in Penang.
Directly across the waters from the hotel, reclamation works of Seri Tanjung Pinang 2A is nearing completion and the Group’s resources are now focused towards the creation of Penang’s foremost investment, residential, commercial and tourist destination.
