Penang, 31 October 2018 – The Eastern & Oriental (E&O) Hotel celebrates the Festival of Lights with a display of vibrant coloured kolam lit up with traditional earthen lamps.

Fifteen hotel staff of various ethnic backgrounds worked together for seven hours to complete a beautiful kolam at the hotel lobby.

Featuring floral patterns, the 4.7m by 4.7m kolam at the Heritage Wing was created using 60kg of broken rice coloured in-house.

E&O Berhad group hospitality and lifestyle director Micheal Saxon said the harmonious, vivid colours of the art pieces represent the vibrancy of the Deepavalli celebrations and were a real feast for the eyes. He hoped hotel guests greeted by the kolam would feel the same positivity.

“Our employees have been designing kolam for so many years, and this time they decided to set the benchmark higher by creating kolam of a larger scale at the lobbies of both wings.

“Many foreign hotel guests are curious of the colourful art display and our staff are always proud to explain the meaning behind it and share with them the Hindu belief.

“All guests and visitors are welcome to take photos with the kolam and spread the beauty of this tradition with their family and friends,” he said.

The kolam will be displayed from Oct 29 to Nov 6 at the E&O Hotel Heritage Wing lobby.
